Note that the waist of the laser beam cannot be at infinity otherwise no calculation related to lasers can be performed. Therefore, as the waist is at the center of the object surface, performing laser calculations requests that the distance from the object surface to the first surface of the system is finite.

Also the coupling of a laser beam into a single mode fiber optic can only be calculated in this application if the incident beam is spatially coherent, which means that the M-square factors M2X and M2Y are equal to "1".
