As a result of amplification or absorption, diffusion,etc., a transmission per length, when expressed in SI unit (m-1), is necessarily positive. It is larger than 1 as a result of amplification and smaller than 1 otherwise. The transmission per length is calculated according to the Beer-Lambert law. Therefore, correspondances between the "dB.distance-1" units are linear which is not the case for the correspondances between the "distance-1" units.
